  12. What's New in Acrobat Reader 2.1 for Windows
  13.  
  14. Acrobat Reader 2.1 now runs under Windows NT 3.5 (or later), Windows 3.1,
  15. and Windows 95, as well as OS/2 2.11 or later in Windows compatibility mode.
  16.  
  17. Adobe's ATM technology for rendering Type 1 fonts has been built into
  18. Acrobat Reader 2.1 for Windows so it is no longer necessary to install ATM
  19. on Windows systems.
  20.  
  21. Acrobat Reader 2.1 now accepts some specially enabled plug-ins, such as
  22. Weblink and Movie. This allows Acrobat Reader users to take advantage of new
  23. capabilities in PDF files created with Acrobat Exchange, for example
  24. following World Wide Web (URL) links or viewing QuickTime and AVI (Windows
  25. only) movies within a PDF document.
  26.  
  27. Printing quality has been improved to non-PostScript printers.
  28.  
  29. Limitations in printing to some non-Postscript printers with non-square
  30. pixels (some fax modems and dot-matrix printers) have been removed.
  31.  
  32. Acrobat Reader 2.1 generates DSC-compliant PostScript when used with the
  33. AdobePS 3.0 (or later) printer driver.
  34.  
  35. System Requirements
  36.  
  37.    *  386-, 486-based, or Pentium-based personal computer
  38.    *  Microsoft Windows 3.1, Windows 95, or Windows NT 3.5 or greater
  39.    *  4 MB application RAM
  40.    *  4 MB hard disk space
  41.    *  1.44 MB 3.5" floppy disk drive
  42.  
  43. Installation Instructions
  44.  
  45. The installation process is controlled by the Acrobat Installer application.
  46. This installation will create a program group named "Adobe Acrobat" and
  47. install the new Acrobat Reader 2.1 application and support files in the
  48. c:\acroread directory.
  49.  
  50. The installation process does not install ATM, edit any INI files on your
  51. system, and a does not force a restart of Windows after completion.
  52.  
  53. To Install Acrobat(TM) Reader 2.1:
  54.  
  55.   1.  From the Windows Program Manager, choose Run from the File menu.
  56.   2.  Type: [drive]:\acroread.exe
  57.   3.  Follow the instructions on your screen.
  58.  
  59. Installation requires approximately 4 MB of free hard disk space.
  60.  
  61. How Does The Installer Handle Adobe Type Manager (ATM) and Fonts?
  62.  
  63. Acrobat Reader 2.1 for Windows does not install ATM.
  64.  
  65. If TrueType versions of Times, Helvetica, Courier, Symbol, or Zapf Dingbats
  66. are installed on your system, they are not replaced nor moved.
  67.  
  68. Troubleshooting
  69.  
  70. If you experience problems installing or using Acrobat Reader 2.1 for
  71. Windows, consider the following:
  72.  
  73.      If you downloaded the Reader from an online service or internet site,
  74.      check that the file transferred properly.
  75.  
  76. Errors During Acrobat Reader Installation
  77.  
  78.      When launched, the Acrobat Reader installer (ACROREAD.EXE) makes a copy
  79.      of the ACROREAD.EXE file in the temp directory specified in the
  80.      AUTOEXEC.BAT file. When the drive and directory listed in the "Set
  81.      temp=" line in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file are invalid or you don't have
  82.      write access to that drive and directory,or enough space on the drive,
  83.      the Acrobat Reader installation fails, and returns the errors "Cannot
  84.      load the language library", "Cannot load the license agreement", or
  85.      "Not enough free disk space to continue installation".
  86.  
  87.      Do one or more of the following:
  88.  
  89.         * Ensure there is at least 4-8MB free disk space available on the
  90.           hard drive onto which Acrobat Reader is being installed.
  91.  
  92.         * Ensure the "Set temp=" line in the AUTOEXEC.BAT is valid:
  93.  
  94.             1. Open the AUTOEXEC.BAT file in a text editor that saves as
  95.                text-only (e.g., Windows Write, Notepad).
  96.             2. Locate the line that reads "Set temp=" and verify the drive
  97.                and directory following the equal sign are valid. When the
  98.                "Set temp=" line points to an invalid drive or directory,
  99.                edit the line to point to a valid drive and directory, then
  100.                save the file as text-only.
  101.             3. Reboot the computer.
  102.  
  103.         * Ensure you have write access to the drive where the TEMP directory
  104.           is located.
  105.  
  106. Windows 95 Issues
  107.  
  108.      Acrobat Exchange and Reader 2.1 are Windows 95 compatible applications,
  109.      but they are not yet Windows 95 logo compliant. This means they will
  110.      run under Windows 95 but may not meet all of Microsoft's guidelines for
  111.      complete Windows 95 compliance, such as various user interface
  112.      elements, long filenames, etc. A Windows 95 logo-compliant verions of
  113.      Acrobat Reader is scheduled for early 1996.
  114.  
  115.      Toolbar - If you change the 3D Objects color in the Display Properties
  116.      dialog (Appearance panel) the activated buttons in the toolbar will not
  117.      display properly. For best results, use the Windows Standard color
  118.      scheme.
  119.  
  120.      n-up Printing - n-up printing from Acrobat Exchange does not work with
  121.      the standard PostScript printer driver installed by Windows 95. n-up
  122.      printing is supported by the AdobePS 3.01 (or later) driver.
  123.  
  124. Weblink Plug-in Issues
  125.  
  126.      Spyglass Mosaic under Win32s crashes intermittantly when a download is
  127.      cancelled from Weblink.
  128.  
  129.      An invalid gopher URL (e.g. gopher://example.com/pub/test.pdf) will
  130.      download an error message as a text file with the PDF file name.
  131.      Acrobat Reader will return the message "There was an error opening this
  132.      document. File does not begin with %PDF-".
  133.  
  134.      If the web browser is busy contacting the host for over one minute,
  135.      Weblink will return the message "The web browser has not responded to
  136.      your request for over 1 minute: terminating request". The browser may
  137.      not respond to Weblink's attempt to cancel; use the web browser button
  138.      in the toolbar to activate the browser and manually cancel the request.
  139.  
  140. PCL Printing Issues
  141.  
  142.      The printer drivers shipped with Microsoft Windows 3.1 for the HP
  143.      LaserJet III, IIID, IIIP, and IIISi printers may not work well with
  144.      Acrobat Reader (and other applications for that matter). Adobe
  145.      recommends you use a PCL printer driver based on the Universal Printer
  146.      Driver V.3.1.2. Here are four ways to get this driver:
  147.  
  148.         * COMPUSERVE. Type "GO MSL" to get to the Microsoft Software Library
  149.           forum. Download the file named HPPCL5.EXE. Place this file on an
  150.           empty, formatted DOS diskette then from DOS run the file to
  151.           extract the driver and installation instructions which are in the
  152.           file named printer.txt.
  153.  
  154.         * MICROSOFT'S BULLETIN BOARD. Microsoft's bulletin-board download
  155.           service can be reached at 206-936-6735. It supports up to 9600
  156.           baud and you should set up your modem to use 8-bit, 1 stop bit,
  157.           and no parity. Once connected, there is a menu-driven bulletin
  158.           board. Download the file named "HPPCL5.EXE" and follow the same
  159.           directions as above.
  160.  
  161.         o MICROSOFT. If you don't have a modem, you may call Microsoft
  162.           directly at 206-637-7098 or 800-426-9400 and obtain the LaserJet
  163.           III printer drivers on a diskette.
  164.  
  165.         o HEWLETT PACKARD. Again, if you don't have a modem, you may call
  166.           Hewlett Packard directly at 303-353-7650 and obtain the LaserJet
  167.           III printer drivers on a diskette. You may also use this number to
  168.           obtain the latest printer drivers for the HP LaserJet 4, DeskJet,
  169.           and PaintJet families of printers.
  170.  
  171.      If you experience problems printing to HP LaserJet printers in the
  172.      600-dpi mode try switching back to 300-dpi mode or if it is equipped
  173.      with a PostScript option, use the PostScript mode for 600-dpi printing.
  174.      This 600-dpi PCL5 printing problem does not seem specific to Acrobat.
  175.  
  176.      Documents with various graphic images may not print correctly to the
  177.      LaserJet 4 in PCL mode at 600 dpi unless the Graphics option in the
  178.      Windows printer driver setup is set to Raster mode.
  179.  
  180.      To increase printer performance of documents formatted entirely in
  181.      landscape orientation to non- PostScript printers the printer driver
  182.      must be set in landscape orientation in the Windows printer setup.
  183.  
  184. Postscript Printing Issues
  185.  
  186.      AdobePS 3.01 driver - For best results when printing to PostScript
  187.      printers, Adobe recommends you use the AdobePS 3.01 (or later) driver.
  188.      The driver and installation instructions are included on the Adobe
  189.      Acrobat 2.1 Sampler CD.
  190.  
  191.      AdobePS 2.1.1 Driver - You may experience problems when printing from
  192.      Acrobat Reader 2.1 when using the AdobePS 2.1.1 printer driver. The
  193.      problems occur in printing certain documents that use TrueType fonts or
  194.      extended characters, such as typographic quote marks. A PSPrinter 2.1.2
  195.      update that fixes both of these problems is available. The AdobePS
  196.      2.1.2 update upgrades an installed version of AdobePS 2.1.1 to 2.1.2 is
  197.      available from the following sources:
  198.  
  199.         * COMPUSERVE. Type GO ADOBE to get to the Adobe forum.
  200.  
  201.         * FTP. Adobe's ftp Server is at ftp.adobe.com. The path to the
  202.           updater is
  203.           ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/Applications/Drivers/Windows/adobeps.exe
  204.  
  205.         * WORLD WIDE WEB. Adobe's World Wide Web server is at
  206.           http://www.adobe.com.
  207.  
  208.         * PHONE. Call 800-521-1976 to have the AdobePS 2.1.2 update disk
  209.           sent to you directly. Shipping and handling charges may apply.
  210.  
  211.      Note: The update is not the complete, standalone AdobePS 2.1.2 driver.
  212.      It will only update a previously installed version of AdobePS 2.1.1.
  213.  
  214.      Memory Issues If you encounter problems, such as as VMerror, printing
  215.      to PostScript Level 1 or 2 printers it may be because the printer has
  216.      little available memory (for example, a non-upgraded LaserWriter,
  217.      LaserWriter Plus, LaserWriter II NT or NTX). There are two potential
  218.      solutions to this problem:
  219.  
  220.         * In the General Preferences dialog (select from the
  221.           Edit/Preferences menu) you may choose to use Serif only or Sans
  222.           only for font substituion. This frees up additional memory in the
  223.           printer and chances are your document will print successfully.
  224.         * The other option is to purchase more memory for your printer.
  225.  
  226.      Apple Personal LaserWriter NT If you are using an Apple Personal
  227.      LaserWriter NT printer that has not been upgraded to a Personal
  228.      LaserWriter NTR, Acrobat Reader won't be able to print substitute
  229.      fonts. Contact your Apple dealer for information on upgrading your
  230.      printer.
  231.  
  232. Miscellaneous Issues
  233.  
  234.      CANON BJC 800 PRINTER In order to properly print text, graphics, and
  235.      images to this printer be sure to check the Use Print Manager option in
  236.      the Printers control panel.
  237.  
  238.      CANON LBP-8IV Use the printers bitmap mode for best results.
  239.  
  240.      COMPAQ MGA8.DRV VIDEO DRIVER Using this video driver (installed on
  241.      Compaq DeskproXL 586 (1024x768, 640x480, 256 colors) with Compaq
  242.      Qvision 2000 board may cause Acrobat Reader to crash. Solution: Turn
  243.      off Page Caching in the Edit > Preferences > General dialog.
  244.  
  245.      HP DESKJET 500C This printer has an unprintable area near the top of
  246.      the page. Be sure to use the Shrink to Fit option in Acrobat Reader's
  247.      Print dialog.
  248.  
  249.      FONT NOT FOUND A font not found error may indicate that ATM did not
  250.      have enough memory to create a substitute font. See the Improving
  251.      Performance section of this file for information on how to increase the
  252.      memory available to ATM (if installed).
  253.  
  254.      INSTALL Due to problems with some Desktop Managers, during installation
  255.      the Adobe Acrobat program group and the Acrobat Reader program item may
  256.      not be created. By default, the program is installed in the directory
  257.      c:\acroread and the executable is c:\acroread\acroread.exe.
  258.  
  259.      LOTUS NOTES When you open an embedded PDF file from a Notes database,
  260.      the Acrobat Reader window may seem to flicker slightly. This is because
  261.      Lotus Notes is giving Acrobat Reader OLE instructions to Show, Hide,
  262.      then Show the PDF document.
  263.  
  264.      MACH 32 VIDEO CARD FROM ATI If you are using the MACH 32 ATI card, be
  265.      sure to use the 256-color mode with the Color Pallette ON. In other
  266.      words, do not use the 256-color mode with the color pallette off. For
  267.      Acrobat, make sure the Pallette is ON.
  268.  
  269.      NEC ULTRALITE VERSA LINEAR DRIVER Rotated images may display with
  270.      artifacts when using the UltraLite Versa Linear 640x480 256 color video
  271.      driver. Solution: Use the UltraLite Versa 640x480 256 color driver.
  272.  
  273.      NUMBER 9 VIDEO DRIVER When Acrobat Reader's page caching is enabled, if
  274.      you experience horizontal lines running across the page try turning off
  275.      the turbo mode in the #9GXE video driver. This can be done via the
  276.      Turbo menu in the program π#9GXE StatusΣ available in the #9 Hawkeye
  277.      Control Panel.
  278.  
  279.      PAGE CACHING Page caching is disabled for 16-bit and 24-bit displays
  280.      and the option is grayed out in the General Preferences dialog.
  281.  
  282.      PATTERNS Files produced by the Acrobat Distiller containing patterns
  283.      may display slowly and cause memory shortages. This can often be the
  284.      case when applications represent patterns as thousands of small Type 3
  285.      font characters. If you experience this problem, it is recommended to
  286.      use color rather than pattern fills.
  287.  
  288.      PC TOOLS FOR WINDOWS 1.0 No Adobe Acrobat group is created and no
  289.      program items/icons are created. See INSTALL problem above for
  290.      description of workaround.
  291.  
  292.      PHONENET PhoneNet does not properly map Macintosh file names containing
  293.      upper-ASCII characters. As a result, you will not be able to open any
  294.      such files in Acrobat Reader. Solution: Don't use special characters in
  295.      file names to be accessed by both Macintosh and Windows users over a
  296.      PhoneNet network.
  297.  
  298.      PRINTING FROM FILE MANAGER Only one PDF file at a time can be selected
  299.      and printed from the File Manager.
  300.  
  301.      ROTATED/TRANSFORMED TRUETYPE FONTS You may encounter some problems with
  302.      displaying or printing rotated or otherwise transformed TrueType fonts.
  303.      This is a limitation of TrueType and Windows. For best results, we
  304.      recommend you use Adobe PostScript Type 1 fonts in your documents.
  305.  
  306.      STANDARD MODE Acrobat Reader 2.1 does not work in standard mode; you
  307.      must be running Windows 3.1 in enhanced mode.
  308.  
  309.      SYSHOOK Syshook is an application that patches the system menus of
  310.      applications; it does not work well with Acrobat Reader.
  311.  
  312.      TRUE TYPE TrueType fonts cannot be reencoded. Because of this
  313.      limitation, documents that were created using some special characters
  314.      in a Type 1 font may not display correctly if a TrueType version of the
  315.      font with the same name is installed on your system. When this happens,
  316.      the error message πSome text in the font and character 'FONTNAME ###'
  317.      could not be displayed or printed correctly. The font could not be
  318.      reencoded.Σ is displayed. Since the Acrobat installers do not replace
  319.      TrueType versions of Times, Helvetica, and Courier you may get this
  320.      message with these fonts. Solution: Use the Custom Install option to
  321.      install a Type 1 version of these fonts.
  322.  
  323.      WINDOWS FOR WORKGROUPS The Windows for Workgroups Netware extensions
  324.      (\windows\netx.com) have been known to cause problems with Acrobat
  325.      Reader's Open dialog, as well as other applicationΓs Open dialog.
  326.      Solution: Contact Microsoft.
  327.  
  328.      WRONG COLORS If the colors on your monitor seem completely wrong, try
  329.      the following. In the Acrobat Reader's ini file
  330.      (c:\windows\acroread.ini) try changing the line 'IS8514=4' to
  331.      'IS8514=105'.
  332.
